Developed by TOSE for the NES in 1990, Shingen the Ruler is a turn-based historical strategy game set during Japan’s Sengoku period. You take command of the legendary warlord Takeda Shingen with the goal of conquering central Japan. Gameplay is divided between grand strategy, where you manage resources, train armies, and forge alliances, and tactical turn-based combat that takes place on a hex grid.
How to play
Your objective is to build up your territory and defeat rival warlords like Uesugi Kenshin while managing your province’s wealth and military strength. In the browser emulator, use the Arrow Keys (D-pad) to navigate menus and move units, Z (A button) to confirm commands, and X (B button) to cancel selections. Use Enter for Start and Shift for Select.
Tips
- Always balance your economy: high taxes will generate more gold in the short term but lower peasant loyalty, risking devastating rebellions.
- During tactical battles, terrain matters significantly. Positioning your cavalry on plains rather than mountains will give them a distinct combat advantage.
- Do not neglect diplomacy. Forging temporary alliances can secure your borders while you focus your main forces on a single enemy province.
