Shadowrun is Beam Software’s 1993 cyberpunk action-RPG for the SNES, based on the tabletop game of the same name, and this Japanese release (published March 1994, subtitled in Japanese over the original English script) opens with a noticeably longer introductory cutscene than the US and European versions. You play Jake Armitage, a shadowrunner gunned down on a Seattle street in the year 2050 and revived with total amnesia, a datajack in his skull, and no idea why a shapeshifting fox spirit saved his life. Piecing together his own identity means investigating a conspiracy tied to the Aneki Corporation and a crime lord named Drake, whose secret is far worse than anyone expects.
How to Play
Movement and combat use a cursor-driven, real-time isometric interface — assassins can ambush you on almost any street, so staying alert and retreating when outgunned matters as much as fighting back. Dialogue runs on a keyword system: NPCs teach you new terms as you talk to them, and asking the right character about the right keyword is often the only way to unlock the next lead. Defeating enemies earns karma, which you spend on attributes, skills, and magic when you rest, and nuyen lets you buy gear or hire fellow shadowrunners — including deckers, who take Jake into the Matrix through a cyberdeck for hacking sequences where dying in cyberspace kills you in the real world too.

Tips
- Revisit NPCs after learning new keywords elsewhere — many won’t hand over their most important information until you ask about the specific term they’re waiting to hear.
- Loot every downed enemy before leaving a screen; nuyen and key items you skip are often not recoverable later.
- Don’t send Jake into the Matrix underprepared — hire a decker or gear up first, since dying while jacked into cyberspace is fatal in the real world too.
