Released by Lucasfilm Games in 1990, The Secret of Monkey Island is a classic point-and-click adventure game for DOS. You play as Guybrush Threepwood, an eager young man who arrives on Mรชlรฉe Island with dreams of becoming a mighty pirate, only to find himself entangled with the ghost pirate LeChuck and the governor Elaine Marley. It is widely celebrated for its sharp writing, memorable humor, and forgiving design that prevents players from dying or getting stuck in unwinnable states.
How to play
The game uses the SCUMM interface, where you interact with the world by combining a list of action verbs at the bottom of the screen with objects and characters. In the browser, you can control the cursor entirely with your mouse, clicking to move Guybrush, select verbs, and manage your inventory. Your goal is to complete the Three Trials of pirating, assemble a crew, and eventually sail to the legendary Monkey Island to rescue the governor.
Tips
- Talk to everyone you meet and explore all dialogue trees; many of the game’s best jokes and crucial hints are hidden in conversations.
- When you reach the insult sword fighting portion, you must lose fights to learn new insults and their corresponding comebacks before you can challenge the Sword Master.
- If you find yourself stuck, try looking at items in your inventory or combining them in unusual waysโthe logic is often humorous but consistent.
