Samurai Zombie Nation is a notoriously weird horizontal shoot ’em up for the NES. Essentially a release variant of the cult classic Zombie Nation, you play as Namakubiโa giant, disembodied samurai headโflying across the country to destroy cities, fight monsters, and stop a zombie infection. It stands out for its surreal premise and destructible environments, letting you level entire skyscrapers as you blast through each stage.
How to Play
The game plays like a side-scrolling shooter with a heavy emphasis on destroying your surroundings. Your goal is to survive waves of enemies and defeat the boss at the end of each stage. Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move, and press A or B (Z and X keys) to fire projectiles from your eyes and mouth.
Tips
- Destroy buildings completely. When you smash structures, tiny hostages will fall out. Catch them before they hit the ground to upgrade your firepower.
- Your character has a large hitbox, so focus on clearing paths through the scenery and buildings rather than trying to dodge everything in the open air.
- Unlike many arcade shooters, you have a health bar. You can afford to take a few hits, which allows for a much more aggressive playstyle.
