Rick Dangerous 2 is a famously punishing sci-fi platformer developed by Core Design and released for DOS in 1990. Swapping the Indiana Jones-style setting of the original for a futuristic battle against an alien invasion, the game puts you back in the shoes of the titular British secret agent. Like its predecessor, it is notorious for its brutal, trial-and-error level design where unseen traps, sudden enemy spawns, and environmental hazards require careful memorization and precise execution.
How to play
Your objective is to navigate Rick through a series of deadly alien environments, reaching the end of each stage while avoiding instant death. You are armed with a laser gun with limited ammo and a stock of bombs. Rick can move, jump, punch enemies, shoot his laser, and slide bombs along the ground to clear obstacles. Since this is the DOS version, use your keyboard’s arrow keys for movement and jumping. Pressing the fire button in combination with a direction allows you to shoot, punch, or deploy bombs.
Tips
- Memorize the hazards: Death is frequent and part of the intended experience. Learn from every trap so you know exactly what to expect on your next life.
- Slide your bombs: Use your bombs tactically to clear out enemies and blockages from a safe distance before moving forward.
- Conserve ammunition: Laser blasts are limited. Rely on your punch for close-quarters combat whenever it is safe to do so.
