In Rescue Rover, an early puzzle game developed by id Software in 1991, you play as Roger on a mission to save his dog, Rover, from a series of robot-infested levels. This grid-based DOS game requires careful planning as you push crates to block enemy lines of sight, place mirrors to deflect laser beams, and outmaneuver different types of robots. The challenge steadily escalates as you figure out how to reach Rover and safely escort him back to the starting ladder in each stage.
How to play
Your objective is to navigate the level, retrieve Rover, and return together to the ladder where you started. The game is controlled using standard MS-DOS keys, primarily the arrow keys to move around the grid and push objects. You will need to use crates to block paths, trap roaming enemies, and create bridges over water, while mirrors must be correctly positioned to redirect lethal lasers. You can press Right Alt + Enter to toggle fullscreen.
Tips
- Observe enemy patterns: The four types of robots have specific behaviors. Stationary turrets only fire if you step into their direct line of sight, while chasers will actively pursue you. Plan your route before making your first move.
- Rover follows you: Once you reach Rover, he will follow your exact path back to the exit. Make sure you have cleared a safe return route beforehand, as robots can still intercept you on the way back.
