Game description:

Released by Dynamix and Sierra On-Line in 1990, Red Baron is a landmark World War I flight simulator for DOS that defined early 3D aerial combat. Players enlist in either the Royal Flying Corps or the German Air Service, piloting faithfully recreated biplanes and triplanes like the Sopwith Camel and Fokker Dr.I. Known for its atmospheric campaign and early polygon graphics, the game lets you engage in tense dogfights, fly historic patrols, and test your skills against famous aces, including Manfred von Richthofen himself.

How to play

Your objective is to survive your sorties, complete mission goals like balloon busting or patrol sweeps, and rack up aerial victories to advance your rank. As a classic DOS simulation, the controls rely heavily on the keyboard. Use the arrow keys for pitch and roll, and standard flight simulator keys for throttle and weapons. You can press Right Alt + Enter at any time to play in fullscreen.

Tips

  • Speed and altitude are your greatest advantages. Always try to start an engagement from above your enemy so you can dive and dictate the terms of the fight.
  • When flying rotary-engine aircraft like the Sopwith Camel, remember that the engine’s torque will pull the plane sharply during tight right turnsโ€”use this to outmaneuver opponents in a dogfight.
