Game description:

Developed by Namco and localized by Tengen, R.B.I. Baseball (1988) for the NES made history as the first console sports game licensed by the Major League Baseball Players Association. Although it lacked official team names, it famously featured real-world player names, rosters, and statistics from the era. The gameplay combines accessible, arcade-style baseball with distinctive “super deformed” character sprites, creating a fast-paced and highly competitive experience that became a defining title for the system.

How to Play

The objective is to outscore the opposing team over nine innings. You can control the action using the standard NES layout (mapped to the Arrow Keys for the D-pad, Z/X for the A and B buttons, and Enter/Shift for Start and Select). Use the D-pad to position your batter in the box or steer pitches mid-flight. Press the A button to swing or pitch the ball, and use the B button for base running actions like stealing or picking off runners. Press Start to pause or bring in a relief pitcher.

Tips

  • Watch pitcher fatigue: Pitchers have stamina limits based on their real-world stats. If your pitches start slowing down or losing their curve, it is time to go to the bullpen.
  • Steer your pitches: Once the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand, you can still use the D-pad to curve its trajectory in mid-air to trick the batter.
