Game description:

Sid Meier’s Pirates! is a legendary open-world strategy RPG originally released in 1987, with this fantastic NES port arriving in 1991. You start as a lowly captain with a single ship, tasked with building a fortune and a reputation on the high seas of the 17th-century Caribbean. You can pledge loyalty to different European powers, trade goods, hunt for buried treasure, rescue family members, and engage in thrilling ship-to-ship combat and sword fighting.

How to Play

Your goal is to build wealth, fame, and land before retiring. Time is always passing, and your crew’s happiness depends on regular payouts from your plunder.

  • D-pad / Arrow Keys: Steer your ship, navigate menus, and control your captain during sword fights.
  • A (Z key): Fire cannons in naval battles or perform high sword attacks.
  • B (X key): Perform low sword attacks or cancel out of menus.
  • Start (Enter): Open the main menu or pause.
  • Select (Shift): View your current status and maps.

Tips

  • Watch the wind: During naval battles, keeping the wind at your back is critical. It allows you to outmaneuver enemy galleons and line up broadside cannon shots.
  • Choose your era wisely: The starting year drastically changes the political landscape. The 1560s offer wealthy Spanish targets but heavily fortified towns, while the 1660s provide a more balanced field with active French and English privateers.
  • Divide the plunder: If crew morale drops to “Angry,” they might mutiny. Divide the plunder at a friendly port to secure your wealth, increase your rank, and start a new expedition with a fresh, happy crew.
