Phoenix is a classic arcade fixed shooter originally released in 1980. This specific version is a Spanish bootleg distributed by Sonic. It features the same iconic, multi-stage wave structure as the original, standing out as one of the earliest arcade games to include a distinct final boss battle. You must defend your ship against swooping alien birds across multiple stages before taking the fight to a massive mothership.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive five distinct waves of enemies. The first two waves feature small, fast-moving birds, while the third and fourth waves introduce larger “phoenix” birds that must be shot directly in the center to be destroyed. The fifth wave is the mothership boss. You control a horizontally moving ship equipped with a standard laser and a unique shield ability. The shield provides temporary invincibility, but it immobilizes your ship and requires a short cooldown before it can be used again.
Controls: Press Shift or 5 to insert coins, and Enter or 1 to start. Use the Arrow Keys to move left and right. Press the action keys (typically Z, X, or C) to fire your weapon and activate your shield.
Tips
- Time your shields: Don’t rely on the shield constantly. Save it for unavoidable enemy dive attacks or when cornered by enemy fire, as being stuck in place can leave you vulnerable right after it expires.
- Aim for the center: The larger birds in waves three and four can survive having their wings shot off. You must hit them directly in the body to destroy them completely.
- Tunnel through the mothership: On the final stage, focus your fire on a single column of the mothership’s underside to carve a quick path to the alien pilot in the center, rather than shooting across the entire width.
