Game description:

Phelios is a vertically scrolling shoot ’em up released by Namco for arcades in February 1989, running on the Namco System 2 board. Loosely drawing on Greek mythology, it casts you as Apollo, the sun god, riding his winged horse Pegasus across the skies of ancient Greece to rescue his sister Artemis, goddess of the moon, from the fiend Typhon. This Japan release is the game’s original and only arcade version — later ports brought it to the Sega Genesis in 1990.

How to Play

Fly Pegasus through seven stages, each set in a different part of ancient Greece, dodging enemy fire and destroying waves of mythological foes with Apollo’s sword. Tap the fire button for a quick shot, or hold it down to charge a larger fireball that releases on letting go. A golden owl named Bubo appears periodically and drops power-up items when shot. In the final stage, collect the seven letters spelling P-H-E-L-I-O-S to assemble the titular sword. In the browser, standard arcade controls apply:

  • Move Pegasus: Arrow keys
  • Fire / Charge shot: Z
  • Insert Coin: Shift
  • Start: Enter

Tips

  • Hold for power: The charged fireball deals far more damage than the rapid tap-shot and is worth using against tougher enemies and bosses, even though it briefly leaves you unable to fire.
  • Don’t ignore Bubo: Shooting the golden owl whenever it flies past is one of the few reliable ways to upgrade your weapon, so prioritize it over ordinary enemies when it appears.
  • Save the letters for the final stage: The P-H-E-L-I-O-S pickups only matter in the final, seventh stage, so don’t worry about tracking them until you get there.
