Xain D Sleena (also released as Solar-Warrior) is a sci-fi action arcade game developed by Technōs Japan and released in 1986. The game uniquely blends two distinct gameplay styles: traditional side-scrolling run-and-gun platforming on planetary surfaces, and horizontal space shoot-’em-up segments that occur as you travel between worlds. As the bounty hunter Xain, you can choose the order of the five planets you wish to liberate from the invading Glary empire.
How to Play
The game uses a standard arcade layout consisting of an 8-way joystick and two action buttons. In your browser, use the arrow keys to move, crouch, or aim your weapon, and press Z to shoot and X to jump. Press Shift to insert a coin and Enter to start. After defeating a boss on foot, you will board your ship and the controls seamlessly transition to navigating and firing in the side-scrolling shooter phases.
Tips
Xain has a rare double-jump ability that is crucial for avoiding hazards and dodging enemy projectiles. Take advantage of your crouch to avoid high shots, and collect the “P” capsules to upgrade your standard laser into powerful spread-fire or piercing weapons. Memorizing enemy spawn patterns is key to surviving the challenging space shoot-’em-up sections between planets.
