Game description:

Pengo is the 1982 arcade classic from Sega/Coreland Technology, and this build (“Set 3, Not Encrypted”) is the version of the original arcade ROM used here, running without the CPU encryption found on some later revisions. You play Pengo, a penguin trapped in a maze of ice blocks, and must clear each stage of Sno-Bee enemies by pushing blocks into them or squashing them between two blocks at once. It plays like a cousin of Pac-Man, but the core trick isn’t just avoiding enemies — it’s turning the maze itself into your weapon.

How to play

Move Pengo through the ice maze with the arrow keys, and use Z (or the action key) to push a block of ice in the direction you’re facing. A pushed block slides until it hits a wall or another block, crushing any Sno-Bee caught in its path. You can also crush an enemy by standing next to a block and letting it push back if a Sno-Bee shoves it into you from the other side — timing that carefully is safer than it sounds. Clear every enemy from the maze to advance to the next round; losing all your lives to enemy contact ends the game.

Tips

  • Look for the three diamond-marked blocks in each maze and push them into alignment — connecting all three stuns every Sno-Bee on screen for a few seconds and awards a big bonus, giving you a safe window to clear the level.
  • Pushing a block is often safer than running past an enemy in the open; use corridors to line up a crushing blow instead of trying to outrun a Sno-Bee in the open maze.
  • Sno-Bees move faster as a stage goes on, so prioritize clearing the ones nearest to you first rather than chasing the ones on the far side of the maze.
