Game description:

Developed by Make Software and published by Nichibutsu in 1992, Mahjong Taisen stands out as the final mahjong release for the Famicom (NES). Rather than being a standard simulator, it features a unique, narrative-driven RPG mode where traditional random encounters and battles are entirely replaced by mahjong matches.

How to Play

Navigate the RPG overworld and defeat opponents by winning mahjong matches to progress the story. For this NES release, use the Arrow Keys (D-pad) to move or select tiles, Z and X (A and B buttons) to confirm or cancel actions, and Enter or Shift (Start/Select) to pause or access menus.

Tips

  • If you want to listen to the game’s music, there is a hidden sound test: hold Down, B (X on your keyboard), and Select (Shift) while resetting the game.
  • Because matches replace RPG combat, focus on building defensive, quick-winning hands rather than risking large, complex combinations that could leave you open to early defeat.
