Game description:

Madou Senki: Deep Dungeon is a pioneering first-person dungeon crawler RPG developed by HummingBird Soft and released for the Famicom Disk System (playable here as an NES game) in 1986. Set in the besieged town of Dorl, you play as a lone adventurer venturing into a multi-tiered labyrinth to defeat Emperor Ruu and recover the stolen soul of Princess Etna. Blending classic Wizardry-style 3D exploration with turn-based combat, it stands as one of the earliest console titles to define the genre.

How to Play

Your goal is to navigate the perilous eight-floor underworld, surviving monster encounters to gain experience, level up, and upgrade your gear in town. Since you explore alone rather than with a party, careful resource management is critical.

  • D-Pad (Arrow Keys): Move and turn through the maze
  • A Button (Z Key): Confirm actions, open doors, and attack
  • B Button (X Key): Cancel actions or access your menus
  • Start (Enter): Start the game
  • Select (Shift): Select options

Tips

  • Map your progress: The 3D dungeons look identical in many areas and can be deeply confusing. Draw a physical map on grid paper as you explore to avoid wandering aimlessly.
  • Grind early: Since you fight solo, you are incredibly vulnerable at the beginning. Stay close to the town entrance on the first floor to grind for experience and gold until you can afford better armor.
  • Watch your health: Do not get greedy. If your HP drops low, head back to town immediately rather than risking another encounter, as a single unexpected monster can quickly end your run.
