Game description:

The Lord of King is an action-platformer released for the NES in 1989. Better known outside of Japan as Astyanax, this console adaptation differs significantly from its arcade counterpart by introducing a more involved storyline and a magic system. Players take control of a high school student summoned to a fantasy realm to wield a mythical axe and rescue a princess. The game stands out for its weapon upgrade mechanics and screen-clearing spells, making for a challenging but rewarding side-scrolling adventure.

How to Play

Your goal is to battle through multiple enemy-filled stages while managing both your health and magic meters. The game controls use the standard NES layout mapped to your keyboard:

  • Arrow Keys: Move and crouch
  • Z Key: Attack (NES B)
  • X Key: Jump (NES A)
  • Enter: Start
  • Shift: Select

To cast your currently selected magic spell, hold the Up arrow key and press the Attack button.

Tips

  • Power-ups will transform your basic axe into a much stronger, longer-reaching weapon. Avoid taking too much damage, or your weapon will downgrade back to its weakest form.
  • Magic is powerful but limited. Save your strongest spells for boss encounters or when you are completely overwhelmed by enemies on the screen.
