Game description:

Lord of Sword (also known as Lord of the Sword) is a side-scrolling action RPG released by Sega in 1988 for the Sega Master System. Players step into the role of the adventurer Landau on an epic quest to restore peace to the realm of Baljinya and claim its vacant throne. The game blends traditional platforming combat with open-world exploration, requiring you to travel between villages, gather clues, and complete three arduous trials to prove your worth as the rightful king.

How to Play

Your objective is to complete the trials assigned by the village elders by exploring the land, defeating monsters, and conquering bosses. The Sega Master System controls map smoothly to a keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to move Landau, press Up to enter doors or talk to villagers, and press Down to crouch. Use Z to attack with your sword or bow, and press X to jump.

Tips

  • Exhaust all dialogue: Whenever you enter a village, interact with the characters and buildings multiple times. Many bosses and secret paths will not appear until you have heard every piece of dialogue an NPC has to offer.
  • Rest in villages: Entering buildings in towns not only provides you with crucial quest information but also completely replenishes your life meter.
  • Use rapid strikes: You can execute rapid sword attacks by holding the forward directional key while repeatedly pressing the attack button. This technique is incredibly useful against tougher enemies and bosses.
  • Use save states: The original cartridge did not feature a save or password system for its long campaign. Take full advantage of the browser emulator’s save state feature so you do not have to finish the adventure in a single sitting.
