Often considered a precursor to the Bubble Bobble series, Chack’n Pop is a single-screen arcade platformer published by Taito for the Sega SG-1000 in 1983. You play as Chack’n, a small yellow creature navigating maze-like stages to rescue caged hearts. The game features unusual movement mechanics: Chack’n can traverse floors and stretch his legs to adhere to ceilings, but cannot climb vertical walls.
How to play
Your goal is to break all the heart cages on the screen using your grenades. Once all hearts are freed, they break the barrier blocking the exit at the top right, allowing you to advance. You must do this before the “Mighta” enemy pushes a stone completely across the top of the screen, acting as a timer.

Tips
- Watch your own explosions: Chack’n throws rolling grenades to destroy obstacles and enemies, but the resulting explosion and smoke cloud will kill you if you touch them.
- Pacifist bonus: While you can bomb the aggressive Monstas that hatch from eggs to earn points, you receive a substantial bonus for completing a stage without killing any enemies.
