World Soccer (also known as World Championship Soccer) is a top-down sports game released as a launch title for the Sega Genesis in 1989. Developed by Sega, it features 24 national teams preparing for the 1990 World Cup. Instead of a side-view perspective common in later football games, it uses a vertical, top-down view where the action scrolls up and down the pitch.
How to Play
The objective is to win the global tournament by outscoring your opponents in full-length matches. Use standard Sega Genesis controls: the D-pad (arrow keys) moves your currently selected player. On offense, press B (X) to short pass, C (C) for a long pass, and A (Z) to shoot. On defense, use B to switch to the player closest to the ball, and A to perform a sliding tackle to steal possession.
Tips
- Tackling is highly effective but risky; time your slides carefully to avoid receiving a yellow or red card.
- Use short, quick passes to maintain possession and safely move the ball up the field.
- Shooting diagonally can often trick the opposing goalkeeper, especially when approaching from the corners of the penalty box.
