Developed by FTL Games and released in 1987, Dungeon Master is a pioneering real-time, first-person role-playing game for the SNES. You explore the sprawling dungeons of Mount Anaias in a grid-based environment, assembling a party of four champions from the Hall of Champions. The game is highly influential for introducing real-time combat to the dungeon crawler genre, requiring fast reflexes alongside careful resource management for food, water, and light, as well as a unique rune-based magic system.
How to Play
Your objective is to descend into the dungeon, retrieve the Firestaff, and defeat Lord Chaos. Combat happens in real-time, so you must physically dodge enemy attacks by side-stepping in the dungeon corridors. Use the controls below to navigate, attack, and cast spells.

Tips
- Master the “Dungeon Master Step”: In combat, strafe sideways to dodge incoming attacks, hit the enemy while they are facing the empty space, and sidestep again. This hit-and-run tactic is essential for survival.
- Train your magic early: Cast low-level spells (like creating light or simple potions) repeatedly even when not in combat to level up your spellcasters, increasing their mana pools and unlocking stronger runes.
- Conserve food and water: Starving heroes take damage and cannot regenerate health or mana. Pick up all food items, use the flask to carry water from fountains, and rest only when necessary to avoid draining your supplies.
