Game description:

Link no Bouken – The Legend of Zelda 2 is the Japanese version of the iconic 1987 action-RPG by Nintendo for the NES (Famicom). Departing from the top-down perspective of the original game, this sequel introduces side-scrolling platform combat and a sprawling overworld map with random enemy encounters. It remains one of the most distinctive and challenging entries in the entire series, blending platforming action with deep role-playing elements like experience points and magic spells.

How to play

The objective is to awaken Princess Zelda from a sleeping spell by placing six crystals in palaces across Hyrule and defeating the final boss in the Great Palace. In the browser, the NES controls map the D-pad to the arrow keys, A (jump) to X, B (attack) to Z, Start to Enter, and Select to Shift. You navigate the top-down overworld until you encounter enemy shadows, which transitions you into side-scrolling combat areas.

Tips

  • Master the high and low attacks early. Shielding works automatically while standing still or crouching, so always match your shield height to incoming projectiles.
  • Experience points are lost if you get a game over. If you are close to leveling up, grind nearby enemies to secure the level before entering a dangerous palace.
  • The Downward Thrust, learned in the town of Mido, is essential for bouncing off armored enemies and crossing large gaps.
