Game description:

Lemmings is a puzzle game developed by DMA Design, released for the Sega Genesis in 1991. A stream of small, green-haired creatures marches out of a trapdoor and walks straight ahead — off ledges, into hazards, into walls — without any survival instinct. Your job is to assign specialised skills to individual lemmings to reshape the terrain and steer enough of the group to the exit before time runs out.

How to Play

Each level shows how many lemmings will emerge, how many you must save, and the time limit. You have a fixed supply of eight skills to spend across the whole level:

  • Climber — scales vertical walls instead of turning around.
  • Floater — deploys a parachute on any fall, surviving heights that would kill others.
  • Exploder — detonates after a five-second countdown, blasting a hole in the terrain.
  • Blocker — stands in place and reverses the direction of any lemming that walks into it.
  • Builder — lays a diagonal brick staircase to bridge gaps or reach higher ground.
  • Basher — tunnels horizontally through rock or earth.
  • Miner — digs diagonally downward.
  • Digger — excavates straight down.

Click a skill in the panel at the bottom, then click the lemming you want to assign it to. Use the rate buttons to control how quickly new lemmings emerge from the trapdoor — slowing it early gives you more time to act. Use the mouse to scroll the level and select lemmings; Genesis face buttons map to S (A), X (B), and Z (C), with Start on Enter. If the level is unwinnable, the Nuke button detonates every remaining lemming and ends the round.

Tips

  • Slow the release rate immediately. Fewer lemmings active at once means fewer deaths while you work out your route.
  • Blockers cannot move. Assign Exploder to free the crowd — the five-second fuse and resulting blast can also carve terrain, so position your Blocker where the explosion will be useful.
  • Builders run out of bricks mid-staircase if the span is too long. Watch for the flashing animation near the end; have a second Builder ready to continue, or make sure the first finishes against a wall.
