Joust is a classic 1982 arcade game developed by Williams Electronics where you play as a knight riding a flying ostrich. In a departure from the space shooters common to the era, the game relies on unique flapping physics and jousting combat as you battle waves of enemy knights riding buzzards across floating platforms.
How to Play
Your objective is to defeat all enemy knights in each wave by colliding with them from a higher elevation. If you are higher than the enemy when you clash, you win the joust and they drop an egg; if you are lower, you lose a life. Colliding at the exact same height causes you both to bounce away. Collect the eggs before they hatch into faster, more dangerous knights.
Controls: Use the Left and Right arrows to move, and rapidly press Z or X to flap your mount’s wings and gain altitude.
Tips
- Hold the high ground: The most crucial strategy is maintaining elevation. Always try to stay above the platforms where enemies spawn.
- Beware the lava troll: Flying too close to the lava pits at the bottom of the screen will cause a troll’s hand to reach out and pull you in.
- The Pterodactyl: If you take too long to clear a wave, an invincible pterodactyl appears. Your only hope is to hit it perfectly straight on in the mouth with your lance.
