Joust is a classic 1982 action game developed by Williams, presented here in its Atari 7800 port. Players control a lance-wielding knight mounted on a flying ostrich, battling waves of enemy buzzard-riders in a jousting tournament set above lava pits.
How to Play
The objective is to clear each wave by defeating all enemy knights. Combat is entirely height-based: to unseat an opponent, your mount must be higher than theirs upon collision. If you hit them from below, you lose a life; colliding at the same altitude causes both riders to bounce off. Once an enemy is defeated, they drop an egg that must be collected before it hatches into a stronger knight.
Use the Arrow Keys to steer left or right, and tap Z or X repeatedly to flap your mount's wings and gain altitude. Enter pauses the game.
Tips
- The arena wraps around the edges of the screen; flying off one side instantly brings you out on the other, which is useful for quick escapes or flanking enemies.
- Snatch eggs as quickly as possible, as knights that hatch from uncollected eggs spawn on faster mounts.
- The pterodactyl that appears when you take too long to clear a wave can only be defeated by a precise lance strike directly to its open mouth.
