Released by Interplay in 1994, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings – Volume One is an ambitious action role-playing game for the Super Nintendo that brings the classic fantasy epic to 16-bit life. You begin your journey as Frodo Baggins in the Shire, tasked with gathering the Fellowship and surviving the dangerous trek toward Mount Doom. Unlike traditional turn-based RPGs of the era, the game features real-time combat and exploration, with a massive overworld full of quests, dungeons, and familiar faces from Middle-earth.
How to Play
Your goal is to follow the events of the first book, completing quests and recruiting iconic characters like Aragorn and Legolas to your party. By default in the browser emulator, the SNES D-pad is mapped to the arrow keys for movement. Action buttons (A, B, X, Y) are typically mapped to Z, X, A, and S, with Enter for Start to access your inventory and save your game.
Tips
- Protect your companions: The AI controlling your party members is famously reckless. Keep an eye on their health and manually take control of them if they are in danger.
- Ranged combat is safer: Enemy hitboxes can be unforgiving. Characters like Legolas who use bows will take far less damage than melee fighters.
- Beware the Ring: Frodo can wear the One Ring to become invisible and evade enemies, but doing so slowly drains his health. Use it sparingly.
