Game description:

Hiryuu no Ken – Ougi no Sho, released in North America as Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll, is a 1987 martial arts action game developed by Culture Brain for the NES. Players control Ryuhi, a martial arts master on a quest to recover the stolen Secret Scrolls from the evil Tusk Soldiers. The game notably splits its gameplay into two distinct styles: side-scrolling platforming segments where you collect items and fend off grunts, and one-on-one tournament battles against powerful bosses.

The core of the game is mastering both the platforming “Journey Mode” and the one-on-one “Tournament Mode”. During the fighting segments, the game utilizes a unique “Shingan” (Mind's Eye) system, where a target mark appears on your opponent's body indicating where to strike or block. In the browser, the standard NES controls apply: use the Arrow Keys to move or aim your attacks/blocks, Z to kick, X to punch, Enter for Start, and Shift for Select.

Tips

  • Watch the target marks: During tournament battles, pay close attention to the Shingan target symbols. Attack the mark when it appears on your opponent, and block when it appears on your own fighter.
  • Collect the mandalas: In the side-scrolling sections, thoroughly search for hidden items and mandalas, as you will need them to fully empower Ryuhi for the boss fights.
