Hikari Shinwa: Palthena no Kagami is the original 1986 Japanese release of the classic action-platformer Kid Icarus, developed by Nintendo for the Famicom Disk System (playable here as an NES title). You control the young angel Pit on a grueling ascent from the Underworld to the Skyworld, tasked with rescuing Palutena, the Goddess of Light, from the evil Medusa. The game blends vertical platforming with light RPG mechanics, where defeating enemies yields hearts that act as currency for vital upgrades.
How to Play
The standard NES controls map to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to move, X to jump (A button), and Z to shoot arrows (B button). Press Enter to pause (Start) and Shift for Select. Your objective is to reach the top of the vertical stages, navigate the labyrinth-like fortresses, and defeat the boss of each world.
Tips
- Take it slow early on: The first world is the hardest part of the game. Farm the smaller monsters spawned by the Reapers to collect hearts and safely build your score before moving upward.
- Beware the bottom of the screen: In vertical scrolling stages, the screen does not scroll back down. If you drop below the visible area, you will instantly lose a life.
- Seek out the Gods: Enter doors along your path to find chambers where a god may grant you permanent strength upgrades, provided your score and enemy kill counts are high enough.
