Heisei Tensai Bakabon is a 1991 action-platformer developed by Namco for the NES, available here fully playable in English thanks to KingMike’s translation patch. Based on the classic comedy manga, you take control of Bakabon’s Papa in a game that breaks from typical 8-bit conventions. Rather than running and gunning, the gameplay heavily emphasizes momentum, careful jumping, and obstacle navigation, as you cannot defeat most of the regular enemies you encounter.
How to Play
Your main objective is to guide Papa to the end of each stage while avoiding hazards and enemies. Since Papa has realistic weight and momentum, you must be careful with your movementโfalling from high places or slamming into walls will cause him to take damage. The default NES controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys to move, Z and X to jump and interact, and Enter to pause.
Tips
- Watch your landing animations. Papa is left vulnerable for a few frames after touching the ground from a jump, so avoid landing directly next to moving enemies.
- Since you cannot attack regular enemies, focus entirely on memorizing their patterns and timing your jumps to bypass them safely.
