Game description:

Hatris is a unique falling-block puzzle game released for the NES in 1992, designed by Alexey Pajitnov, the creator of Tetris. Instead of geometric shapes, pairs of different hat stylesโ€”including baseball caps, top hats, cowboy hats, and derbiesโ€”fall from the top of the screen. The goal is to stack five hats of the identical style on top of one another to remove them from the playfield and prevent the screen from filling up.

How to Play

Pairs of hats fall from the top of the screen, and you must arrange them on six heads at the bottom. Use the Left and Right arrow keys (D-pad) to move the falling hats horizontally, and press Z or X (A and B buttons) to swap the positions of the two hats. Press the Down arrow to drop the hats faster, and use Enter (Start) to pause. When five identical hats are stacked consecutively, they disappear and award points.

Tips

  • Plan your stacks: Try to keep different hat styles separated on specific heads to avoid burying hats under mismatched ones.
  • Manage the swap: The two falling hats can only be swapped, not rotated. Pay attention to which side each hat is on so you don’t accidentally block a stack.
  • Helper characters: In some modes, you can use special helper characters to remove or rearrange hats from the bottom of the screen when things get too crowded.
