Gex – Enter the Gecko is a 1998 3D platformer developed by Crystal Dynamics for the PlayStation. As the wise-cracking, television-obsessed mascot Gex, you are pulled into the Media Dimension to stop Rez from destroying the media world. The game features expansive, pop-culture-themed levels spanning from horror movies and classic cartoons to kung fu films, where you must collect red remotes to unlock new channels.
How to play
Your primary objective in each level is to locate the red remotes hidden throughout or awarded for completing specific tasks, which allows you to access new stages and boss fights. The default PlayStation browser controls map the D-pad or Arrow keys for movement and face buttons (Z, X, C, S, etc.) for jumping, tail-whipping, and using Gex’s tongue to consume power-ups. Gex’s sticky feet also allow him to traverse specialized textured surfaces, climbing walls and ceilings to find hidden paths.
Tips
- Keep an eye out for silver remotes while exploring; these are typically hidden in hard-to-reach areas and are necessary for unlocking secret bonus stages.
- The tail bounce maneuver is essentialโuse it not only to defeat tougher enemies from above but also to gain extra height and reach elevated platforms.
