Game description:

Ultima VII: The Black Gate returns the Avatar to the world of Britannia in this 1994 SNES port of the classic 1992 PC RPG. A mysterious new cult known as the Fellowship and its enigmatic god, the Guardian, have begun threatening the realm. Unlike the expansive open-world original, this Super Nintendo version adapts the experience into a more focused, single-character action-RPG. Exploring the world now happens through discrete, separate areas rather than a seamless map, and combat occurs in real-time right on the exploration screen without party members to manage.

How to Play

In this streamlined adventure, you control the Avatar directly. Use the D-pad to move around the environment (mapped to the Arrow keys in your browser). Press the A button (X on your keyboard) to attack with your equipped weapon, and the B button (Z) to interact with people and objects. The X and Y buttons (S and A) are used to access your inventory and cast spells. Press Start (Enter) to pause or access options, and Select (Shift) to bring up the map when available.

Tips

  • Use the environment: Even in this simplified port, interaction is key. Look for hidden switches behind objects and remember that you can move certain items around to solve puzzles.
  • Stock up on reagents: Magic requires specific ingredients. Always buy or scavenge Ash, Mandrake Root, and other reagents when you find them, as you’ll need them for crucial spells later.
  • Save frequently: The SNES version’s real-time combat can occasionally overwhelm you if you get surrounded by tough monsters. Save your game before entering new dungeons or towns.
