Family Composer is a unique music creation tool developed by Musical Plan and published by Tokyo Shoseki for the Famicom in 1987. Rather than a traditional game, it serves as a creative application that transforms the console into a synthesizer and composition suite, allowing users to write, playback, and arrange their own 8-bit tracks.
The software features a built-in rhythm machine and a melodic pencil tool for placing notes directly onto a musical staff. You can test your compositions in the Graphic Player mode, which provides an animated backdrop while your track plays. Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to navigate the menus and move the pencil on the staff, press A (Z) to place a note or select an option, and B (X) to delete or cancel. Start (Enter) is typically used to begin playback or access sub-menus.
If you have sheet music on hand, you can replicate it directly into the program by mapping the notes onto the staff one by one. Take advantage of the built-in rhythm tracks to easily add percussion to your melodies without having to compose the drum lines from scratch.
