Game description:

Reimagining the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West with a lighthearted twist, Famicom Mukashibanashi – Yuuyuuki – Zenpen (Japan) is a 1989 text adventure developed by Nintendo and Pax Softnica for the Famicom Disk System (NES). As the first half of a two-part story, it follows the mischievous monkey Goku and a young girl named Chao on an epic quest to defeat the demon king Gyumaou. A spiritual successor to Shin Onigashima, the game stands out for its charming character interactions, engaging puzzles, and dual-protagonist system that requires you to carefully coordinate between Goku and Chao.

How to Play

The objective is to guide Goku and Chao through their journey by observing environments, speaking with NPCs, and making the correct menu choices to solve puzzles. Use the arrow keys to navigate the command menus, press Z to confirm an action (A button), X to cancel (B button), and Enter to start the game.

Tips

  • Always “Look” at every new scene before acting; examining the environment often unlocks new dialogue or action commands necessary to progress.
  • If you find yourself stuck, try switching between Goku and Chao, as some characters will only respond to or cooperate with one of them.
