Game description:

Developed by Eurocom and released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, Duke Nukem: Zero Hour takes the iconic action hero out of his usual first-person perspective and into a full third-person shooter. The plot involves time travel, sending Duke across different erasโ€”including modern-day New York, the Old West, Victorian London, and an apocalyptic futureโ€”to stop aliens from rewriting history. With a vast arsenal of both classic and era-specific weapons, alongside a robust four-player split-screen multiplayer mode, it stands out as one of the most ambitious console-exclusive entries in the franchise.

How to Play

Your goal is to blast through hordes of alien enemies, rescue babes, and secure the exit in each time-traveling level. In the browser emulator, the N64 analog stick is mapped to your keyboard’s arrow keys for movement. Use the A, S, D, and F keys (representing the C-buttons) to strafe and adjust your aim. The Z and X keys act as the A and B buttons for jumping and interacting with the environment, while the Shift key typically serves as the N64 Z-trigger to fire your weapon. Press Enter to pause the game and access your inventory.

Tips

  • Master the strafe: Because of the third-person perspective, circle-strafing is essential to dodging enemy fire. Keep moving side-to-side using the C-buttons while firing at tougher aliens.
  • Conserve era-specific ammo: As you travel through time, you’ll pick up unique weapons like the Old West peacemakers or the Victorian blunderbuss. Ammunition for these is scarce outside their specific time periods, so save them for when you really need them.
  • Search for secrets: The levels are large and hide numerous secret areas containing body armor, atomic health, and powerful weapons. Always explore off the main path and check behind breakable objects before proceeding through the level exit.
