Released for the PlayStation in 1998, Devil Dice (originally known as Xi in Japan) is an inventive puzzle game developed by Shift. You control a tiny devil navigating a grid of giant dice, rolling them to match adjacent upward-facing numbersโsuch as three 3s or four 4s. Matching the correct amount causes the dice to slowly sink and clear from the board, preventing the playing field from filling up completely.
How to play
The objective is to clear dice before the grid runs out of space. Use the D-pad (mapped to your keyboard’s arrow keys) to run across the tops of the dice, and the action buttons (typically Z or X) to step down and push them. Matching identical faces initiates a chain reaction; while the dice are sinking into the floor, you have a brief window to push more matching dice into the group to keep the chain going.
Tips
- Plan your rolls: Standard dice rules applyโopposite sides always add up to seven. Use this rule to anticipate which number will face up after a roll.
- Extend your chains: When a group of dice begins to sink, they do not disappear immediately. Use this time to quickly push other matching dice into the sinking group to rack up larger combos.
