Daiku no Gen-san (known internationally as Hammerin’ Harry) is a colourful arcade-style action-platformer developed by Irem and released for the Famicom (NES) in 1991. Players take control of Gen, a hot-blooded carpenter whose home has been torn down by the corrupt Kuromoku Construction Company. Armed with a giant wooden mallet, you must smash your way through construction sites and enemy workers to teach them a lesson.
How to play
Your objective is to reach the end of each stage, using your hammer to defeat enemies, deflect incoming projectiles, and break open crates. The basic NES controls are mapped to your keyboard:
- D-Pad (Arrow Keys): Move left or right, and crouch.
- A Button (X): Jump.
- B Button (Z): Swing your hammer.
- Start (Enter): Pause the game.
Tips
- You can attack upward by pressing Up and B, or perform a ground-pound by pressing Down and B while in the air to stun nearby enemies.
- Keep an eye out for crates that contain power-ups. You can find hard hats that act as a single-hit shield, or items that dramatically increase the size and power of your hammer.
- Your hammer can deflect most thrown objects back at the enemies who tossed them, which is crucial for surviving later levels.
