Commander Keen 3: Keen Must Die! is the concluding chapter of the original Invasion of the Vorticons trilogy, released by id Software for MS-DOS in 1990. In this action-platformer, eight-year-old genius Billy Blaze travels to the Vorticon home planet to confront the Grand Intellect who orchestrated the invasion of Earth. It builds on the engine of the first two episodes while introducing tougher enemy variants, deadlier traps, and a sprawling world map.
How to play
Your objective is to navigate the Vorticon cities and military installations, find keycards to unlock doors, and ultimately defeat the Grand Intellect. Keen can walk, jump, and use his signature pogo stick to reach high ledges, though it takes practice to control his momentum in mid-air. The game is played with standard DOS keyboard controls: use the arrow keys to move, Ctrl to jump, Alt to use the pogo stick, and the Spacebar to fire your stun gun.
Tips
- Master the pogo jump: You can jump slightly higher by pressing the jump key right as the pogo stick strikes the ground.
- Conserve your ammo: Raygun charges are limited. Many enemies can be avoided entirely, and shooting should be a last resort or saved for unavoidable threats like Vorticon Ninjas.
- Explore the map: Some levels are optional and contain valuable extra lives and points. If a level is too difficult, try exploring another path on the world map first.
