Classic Kong is a 2012 SNES homebrew game by Shiru that reimagines Nintendo’s original 1981 arcade classic Donkey Kong with fully redrawn 16-bit graphics and a rearranged soundtrack, while keeping the punishing, precise platforming of the arcade original intact. You play as Jumpman (Mario), climbing girders and ladders to rescue Pauline from Donkey Kong while dodging the barrels he rolls down at you.
How to Play
Use the arrow keys to run and to climb up or down ladders, and press Z to jump. Time your jumps to hop over rolling barrels and gaps, and grab the hammer power-up when it appears to smash barrels for a short burst of safety and bonus points. Reach the top of each stage to complete it and advance.
Tips
- Jump just as a barrel is about to reach you rather than too early — Classic Kong’s collision is faithful to the unforgiving arcade original, so early jumps still get clipped.
- The hammer disables your ability to jump while it’s active, so only grab one when you’re lined up with barrels you actually need to clear, not mid-ladder.
- Ladders with gaps at the top require you to jump off at the right rung — climbing straight through can walk you into a barrel you can’t see coming.
