Game description:

The Chessmaster is a comprehensive chess simulation developed by The Software Toolworks and released for the NES in 1990. Adapting the powerful engine from early home computers for the 8-bit console, it offers a robust experience suitable for both beginners and veterans. The game provides a clear 2D overhead view of the board and includes a variety of tools to analyze and improve your play.

The objective is to outmaneuver your opponent and checkmate their king. Use the D-pad (arrow keys) to move the hand cursor across the chessboard. Press the A button (Z or X in your browser) to pick up a piece and select its destination, and the B button to cancel your selection. Press Start (Enter) at any time to open the main menu and adjust the game settings.

Tips: If you find yourself in a bad position, use the “Take Back” option from the main menu to undo your previous move. You can also ask the computer for a “Hint” to find the best play, or use the board setup feature to practice specific endgame scenarios.
