Championship Rally (known as Exciting Rally: World Rally Championship in Japan) is a top-down racing game developed by Human Entertainment and published by HAL Laboratory for the NES. Never officially released in North America, this semi-rare title challenges you to master rally racing across various international courses featuring tarmac, gravel, and snow. Before hitting the track, you must customize your vehicle’s tires and drivetrain to match the upcoming weather and road conditions.
How to Play
Your objective is to complete each rally stage within the time limit while adapting to different surface types. Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to steer your car through the winding courses, accelerating with the A button (Z or X) and braking with the B button. Since the camera remains fixed in a top-down perspective, you must anticipate turns and adjust your speed to maintain control during drifts.
Tips
- Match tires to the terrain: Choosing the right tires for snow or gravel is critical for maintaining traction and avoiding time-consuming spin-outs.
- Learn the turns: Because of the overhead view, corners can appear quickly. Memorizing the track layout will help you brake at the right moment.
- Feather the throttle: Don’t hold the accelerator down constantly on slippery surfaces; tap it to maintain control through tight corners.
