Brutal: Paws of Fury is a 1994 fighting game starring a cast of anthropomorphic animal martial artists. Every four years, the world’s toughest fighters travel to the uncharted Brutal Island to compete in a grueling tournament; the winner earns the right to challenge the reigning champion, Dali Llama, for the Belt of Heaven. This Sega Genesis version was published in North America by Cybersoft, one of several ports of the original Sega CD game alongside releases on Super NES, Amiga, MS-DOS, and 32X.
The roster includes ten fighters, each with their own fighting style: Kung-Fu Bunny, a nonviolent Shaolin monk fighting to fund his monastery, alongside Prince Leon of Kenya, Rhei Rat, Tai Cheetah, Kendo Coyote, Foxy Roxy, Ivan the Bear, The Pantha, Karate Croc, and the champion, Dali Llama.
How to Play
Move your fighter with the Arrow Keys and hold Down/Back to block. Z, X, and S serve as light, medium, and strong attacks; Enter starts the match and pauses the game. Fighters begin with a limited set of moves, and Brutal’s signature system requires you to win matches to learn each character’s special techniques over time. A password system lets you carry a trained fighter’s learned moveset into a later session instead of starting over.
Tips
- Don’t expect a full moveset from the start โ special attacks and katas have to be earned by winning fights with that character first.
- Write down your password after a session; it’s the only way to keep a fighter’s learned moves for next time.
- Move inputs on the Genesis version differ from the original Sega CD release, so don’t assume a move list written for that version will match here.
