Blaster Master is a classic NES action-adventure released by Sunsoft that seamlessly blends side-scrolling platforming with overhead run-and-gun shooting. You play as Jason Frudnick, exploring a vast subterranean world inside his advanced battle tank, SOPHIA THE 3RD. The game is celebrated for its deep exploration, shifting perspectives, and memorable soundtrack, standing out as one of the defining titles on the console.
How to Play
Your goal is to navigate through eight expansive levels, defeating mutant bosses to acquire vehicle upgrades that unlock new areas. On the NES, use the D-pad (mapped to arrow keys) to move and aim. Press A (Z) to jump and B (X) to fire your weapons. You can press Select (Shift) to have Jason exit the tank and explore on foot, which is required to enter smaller doors and fight through the overhead dungeon sections.
Tips
- When exploring outside the tank in overhead areas, strafing is key. Hold the firing button to lock your shooting direction while moving to safely clear out rooms.
- Don’t forget that SOPHIA THE 3RD takes fall damage from large drops, but Jason does not when he is on foot.
- Conserve your Hover gauge for critical platforming sections later in the game, as it drains quickly and recharges slowly by collecting items.
