Game description:

Released for the NES in 1990, Battle Chess transforms the traditional strategy board game into a lively visual experience. Originally created by Interplay, this classic retains the standard rules of chess but replaces simple piece captures with fully animated, comical combat sequences as pieces cross paths on the board.

How to Play

The objective remains true to the original game: trap the opponent’s king to secure a checkmate. When playing in your browser, use the arrow keys to navigate the board, press Z to select and move a piece, and use X to cancel a move or open the options menu. Press Enter to start the game.

Tips

  • While the combat animations are entertaining, they are purely visual. Stick to solid chess fundamentals like controlling the center of the board and developing your pieces early.
  • If the 3D perspective makes it difficult to read the board, switch to the 2D view in the options menu for a clearer, top-down layout.
  • Adjust the CPU difficulty level in the settings if you find the computer opponent taking too long to calculate moves.
