Game description:

Released in Germany in 1992, this quirky 2D platformer for the NESโ€”originally known in Japan as Bananan Ouji no Daiboukenโ€”puts you in the shoes of a tiny prince on a quest to recover his island’s stolen treasures. Developed by KID, the game stands out from typical platformers with its vibrant graphics and unusual mechanics, seamlessly blending traditional action with item shops and trivia mini-games.

How to play

Your objective is to navigate through colorful, multi-tiered stages to defeat the bosses waiting at the end. While you start with a simple axe, your most important ability is planting seeds to instantly grow tall vines. You can climb these vines to reach higher platforms, dodge enemies, or uncover secrets. Along the way, collect rings to spend in shops scattered throughout the game, allowing you to buy better weapons and health upgrades. Use the D-pad to move, press A to jump, and use B to attack or plant a seed.

Tips

  • Experiment with planting vines everywhere; the levels are highly vertical, and many valuable rings and hidden shops are tucked away off the main path.
  • Prioritize buying weapon upgrades in the shops, as the extended reach and damage will make boss encounters much easier.
  • Since this is the German localization of the game, the trivia mini-games are presented in German. You may need to use trial and error or a translation guide if you aren’t familiar with the language.
