Game description:

Arctic is a unique action-puzzle game developed by Artdink and published by Pony Canyon for the Famicom (NES) in 1990. Marketed as an “Active Rail Playing” game, it challenges you to manage a complex system of tracks in real-time. Though the game is entirely in English, it remained a Japan-exclusive release and stands out as a distinct, early title from a developer famous for the A-Train simulation series.

How to Play

Your objective is to guide the moving blue and yellow balls along the tracks into their matching colored stations. You don’t control the balls directly; instead, use the A or B buttons (mapped to Z/X or Enter/Shift on your keyboard) to toggle the rail switches and change the paths before the balls arrive. The D-pad allows you to scroll the view to inspect the track layout.

Tips

  • Use the silver balls: Touching a silver (or white) ball causes your colored balls to bounce and reverse direction. Use this strategically to buy time or redirect a ball away from a dead end.
  • Watch out for red balls: In later levels, red balls appear on the tracks. If they collide with your colored balls, they will destroy them and result in a game over.
  • Plan ahead: Pause or scroll the map quickly to trace the routes before the balls build up too much speed.
