Altered Beast is a side-scrolling beat-’em-up released by Sega for the Sega Master System in 1989. You play as a resurrected centurion tasked by Zeus to rescue his daughter, Athena, from the demon god Neff in the Underworld. As you battle through undead hordes, you can collect Spirit Balls to increase your strength and ultimately transform into powerful mythical creatures like a werewolf or a weredragon.
How to Play
Fight your way to the end of each stage to confront Neff and his minions. Use the arrow keys to move, Z to punch, and X to kick; press both buttons simultaneously to jump. Enter acts as Start. Defeat the glowing two-headed wolves to collect Spirit Ballsโyou need three per stage to unlock your beast transformation and force the boss battle.
Tips
- Your kick attack generally has better range than your punch, making it safer for keeping approaching enemies at a distance.
- Neff will appear multiple times throughout the stage, but he will only transform into the level boss if you have collected three Spirit Balls. If you miss one, he will flee and the stage will loop.
- Once transformed, your attacks change completely depending on the beast form. Take a moment to learn your new projectiles and dash attacks.
