Alone in the Dark is the pioneering 1992 survival horror action-adventure developed by Infogrames for DOS. Exploring the haunted Derceto mansion as either private investigator Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood, you must solve puzzles and survive Lovecraftian horrors. The game famously introduced the genre’s defining style: navigating 3D polygonal characters through pre-rendered 2D backgrounds from fixed camera angles.
How to play
Your objective is to explore the mansion, piece together the mystery of its former owner, and find a way out alive. The game uses standard DOS keyboard controls. You move with tank controls using the arrow keys, and press Enter to open your inventory. From there, you must select your current actionโsuch as fighting, searching, pushing, or openingโbefore you can interact with the environment. Holding the Spacebar and pressing an arrow key executes your chosen action.
Tips
- Barricade rooms: Monsters will try to enter through windows and floorboards. Pushing heavy furniture, like wardrobes or chests, over these entry points can keep you safe and save precious ammunition.
- Run when necessary: Combat can be clunky and ammo is strictly limited. It is often better to avoid enemies entirely than to stand your ground and fight.
- Mind what you read: While searching for clues in books and documents is essential for solving puzzles, reading certain occult texts will instantly kill you.
