Game description:

Al Unser Jr. Turbo Racing is a fast-paced, arcade-style Formula One racing game released for the NES in 1990 by Data East. Unlike many straightforward 8-bit racers, this title introduces a layer of strategy by giving players a limited “Turbo” boost and requiring tactical pit stops. You can race across a sixteen-track World Grand Prix series, either learning the ropes from Al Unser Jr. himself or creating your own custom driver to upgrade and improve as you climb the ranks.

How to Play

Use the Left and Right arrow keys (D-pad) to steer your car. Press Z (A button) to accelerate and X (B button) to brake. Your car has a manual three-speed gearbox, but you will mostly stay in third gear once you get moving. To activate your signature Turbo boost and reach speeds up to 230 mph, hold Up while in third gear.

Tips

  • Your turbo boost consumes special fuel very quickly. Watch your gauges and make sure to pull into the pit stop to refuel or repair engine damage, otherwise you will be forced to retire from the race.
  • If you want a significant advantage in the World Grand Prix mode, enter “Al Unser Jr.” as your custom driver name. This secret will max out your vehicle’s stats right from the beginning.
  • Always try your best during the single-lap qualifying session before each race. Securing a starting position at the front of the grid makes it much easier to avoid traffic.
