Super Scrabble brings the classic tile-based word game to the Game Boy, released in 1991 and published by Milton Bradley. Despite its name, this is an adaptation of standard Scrabble on a 15×15 board, rather than the expanded version of the physical game. It features a built-in dictionary of over 40,000 words, allowing players to test their vocabulary against five computer difficulty levels or challenge a friend using the Game Link Cable.
The objective remains unchanged: spell intersecting words on the board to score points, maximizing your score by utilizing premium letter and word modifier tiles. On the Game Boy, you use the D-pad to navigate the board and your tile rack, pressing A to select and place letters. Since the screen is too small to show the entire board clearly at once, the game includes a zoom function that lets you get a closer look at specific sections before committing to a play.
When playing against the computer, take advantage of the built-in “Challenge” option if you suspect it has played an invalid word, though be aware the AI’s vocabulary is strictly bound to its internal dictionary. If you draw a rack full of vowels or consonants, don’t hesitate to use the “Dump” feature to exchange tiles, as spending a turn to refresh your letters is often better than making a low-scoring play.
