Bomber Boy, released by Hudson Soft for the Game Boy in 1990, is the Japanese version of the classic maze-action game known elsewhere as Atomic Punk or Dynablaster. As the first Bomberman title to reach Nintendo’s portable console, it features both traditional grid-based levels and an expansive single-player quest. Players navigate through various themed worlds, strategically placing bombs to defeat enemies, destroy obstacles, and collect vital power-ups to upgrade their abilities.
How to play
The goal is to clear each stage by defeating all enemies and finding the hidden exit before the timer runs out. Use the directional arrows to move your character around the grid. Press Z or X (mapped to the A and B buttons) to drop a bomb, and wait for it to detonate to clear blocks or enemies in its blast radius. Be careful not to trap yourself in your own explosions. The Enter key functions as Start, pausing the game or confirming selections.
Tips
- Bombs take a few seconds to detonate; try dropping one and quickly retreating around a corner to safely take out pursuing enemies.
- Pay attention to the power-up panels hidden in destructible blocks. Upgrading your blast radius and bomb capacity early on is crucial for surviving later stages.
- In the single-player quest mode, you earn GP (Gold Pieces) which can be spent in the shop between rounds to buy continues or specialized items.
